Wigan SEO market report

Observations on how search demand behaves across Wigan's main sectors, written in July 2026. Two of them carry dated Search Console figures from sites I run in other towns, named as such throughout.

A note on numbers

There is no search volume figure and no cost per click estimate for Wigan on this page. I have not pulled a dated dataset for the borough and I am not going to invent one, which would be the exact behaviour this site exists to argue against.

The figures that do appear come from Google Search Console on two sites I run myself, in Guildford and in Leeds. They are not Wigan's numbers and are never offered as Wigan's numbers. The source town is named every time one of them appears.

The sleeve notes

What the data actually shows

A large share of this demand is not buyers

On my own Leeds site, queries that look like agency demand sit beside a substantial block of queries from people wanting a course or a job. Those are not businesses looking to hire anyone.

Non-buyer queries recorded in Leeds SOURCED

Google Search Console, my own Leeds site, 90 days to 18 July 2026

seo course leeds 197 impressions
seo courses leeds 178 impressions
seo jobs leeds 155 impressions
seo training leeds 151 impressions
seo training courses leeds 75 impressions
search engine optimisation course leeds 39 impressions
seo training course leeds 14 impressions
search engine optimisation courses leeds 14 impressions

These eight rows total 823 impressions. That is a subtotal of the rows shown and nothing else. It is not the size of the Leeds market, and it says nothing at all about the size of the Wigan one.

Impressions are what one site recorded, not what people searched. A different site would record a different number for the same terms.

Those are Leeds figures from a Leeds site. What transfers to Wigan is the shape of the demand rather than the count.

A Wigan firm chasing the bare head term is competing for attention with training providers and job boards, not only with other agencies. That is a good argument for building pages around the capability, accreditation or process a buyer actually types, which is what the A-side below describes.

The demand sits at positions nobody sees

Across both of those sites in the same window, every single query returned a click-through rate of 0.00% except one. The exception was the phrase seo guildford, which produced one click from 1,035 impressions on my Guildford site. Average positions ran roughly 40 to 95. SOURCED

Google Search Console, my own Guildford and Leeds sites, 90 days to 18 July 2026. That is unflattering about my own work and it is the honest reading of it.

MECHANISM Impressions accumulate long before clicks do, because a page at position 40 to 95 is present in the index and invisible to the searcher. The lesson for a Wigan business is that being findable and being found are two different states.

The A-side

The sectors

Manufacturing and engineering

Wigan sits inside the Greater Manchester manufacturing belt. A substantial part of the local business base makes, machines or fabricates something. These firms are typically found by procurement people searching for a capability, a material or a tolerance, not for a town.

The recurring pattern is a single services page trying to cover a dozen distinct capabilities. That page ranks for none of them. It is not clearly about any one of them.

The fix is unglamorous and reliable. One page per capability, written in the language the specification uses, with the certifications and the machine list stated plainly rather than implied.

Food processing and production

Food manufacturing and processing has a long presence in the borough and behaves differently again. The buyer is usually a trade account. The qualifying questions are accreditation, capacity, allergen handling and pack format.

Almost none of that is usually on the website, because it lives in a PDF or in a salesperson's head. Putting it on indexable pages is often the entire opportunity.

It is also the sector where AI visibility currently pays best, because a buyer asking an assistant to shortlist suppliers by accreditation will only get named firms that published the accreditation somewhere readable.

Logistics and distribution

Wigan's position on the M6 corridor makes distribution a natural fit. The borough carries a good deal of warehousing and haulage. Search demand here is thin but extremely high value, because a single contract can be worth a year of everything else.

Low volume does not mean low priority. It means the handful of searches that do happen are worth winning properly, with pages that answer coverage, capacity and compliance questions directly.

Trades and home services

This is where local search competition in Wigan actually is. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, joiners, boiler engineers and cleaning firms are all competing for the same three map positions across the borough.

The businesses winning here are rarely the ones with the nicest websites. They are the ones with a properly configured Google Business Profile, a steady flow of reviews, and a landing page for each service rather than one page listing everything.

Full detail on that is on the local SEO page.

Professional and business services

Accountants, solicitors, recruiters and consultancies sit awkwardly between the two patterns. Local intent is genuine, so the map pack matters. The decision is made on the website afterwards.

Both halves have to work. A map listing that sends people to a thin, generic site converts badly. A good site that never appears locally never gets the chance.

The B-side

Where the gaps are

Where the gaps are, by sector

SectorPrimary channelMost common gapAI visibility opportunity
Manufacturing and engineeringOrganic, capability searchesOne page covering many capabilitiesHigh, very few competitors are ready
Food processingOrganic, trade buyer searchesAccreditation data trapped in PDFsHigh
Logistics and distributionOrganic, low volume high valueNo coverage or capacity detail publishedModerate

What this means in practice

If you are industrial or business to business, the work is on your own site and it is mostly writing down what you already know. If you are consumer facing and local, the work starts with the Business Profile.

Both routes converge on the same place within a year or two, because assistants are increasingly the first place both kinds of buyer ask.

The Sprint is a fixed £400 FIXED way to find out which of these descriptions is yours, before committing to anything ongoing.

Common questions

Why does this report not quote search volumes for Wigan itself?

Because no dated, attributable dataset for the borough exists in anything I have pulled, and printing an unsourced number would undermine the whole point of the report. The figures that do appear on this page come from Search Console on my own Guildford and Leeds sites and are labelled with their source town every time they appear. They describe how demand is shaped, not how much of it Wigan has.

Is Wigan a competitive search market?

It varies enormously by sector. Trades and home services are contested locally and won or lost in the map pack, while a lot of industrial and business to business search around Wigan is barely contested at all because the incumbents are not doing the work.

Should a Wigan business target Manchester searches too?

Only if you genuinely serve Manchester and can compete there. Chasing the bigger city term while losing the borough term is a common and expensive mistake, because the Wigan term converts and the Manchester term mostly does not.

What is the single most common problem you see on Wigan sites?

A capable business with a website that describes what it does in vague marketing language rather than in the specific terms its buyers search with. The gap between how a firm talks about itself and how its customers describe the same thing is where most of the lost traffic sits.
