Local SEO in Wigan

Local search is a separate ranking system with its own rules. If your business puts a van on the road, this is usually the highest value work available to you.

The A-side

What local search really is

How the map pack decides who gets seen

When Google decides a query has local intent, it stops showing a normal list of pages and shows a map with three businesses above it. Those three take the majority of the clicks on mobile. For a plumber or a boiler engineer that is most of the demand.

Getting into that block is decided by three things, roughly in this order: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance. The work is entirely in the other two.

Relevance is how well your profile and site match the query. Prominence is how well known and well corroborated your business appears to be across the wider web.

The B-side

The work, in order

The Google Business Profile work, in order

Categories
One accurate primary category, then the secondary categories that genuinely apply. This single field decides which searches you are even eligible for. It is the first thing I check and the thing most often wrong.
Service areas
Wigan, Leigh, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Hindley, Standish and wherever else you actually travel to. Listing areas you do not serve dilutes the signal and produces enquiries you have to turn down.
Services and products
Every job type entered individually with a real description. Most profiles leave this blank. That is free ground given away.
Photos
Real photographs of real work, added regularly, geotagged by nothing more exotic than being taken on site. Stock imagery does nothing.
Reviews
A steady trickle beats a sudden burst. Ask at completion, use a direct link, and reply to every one, including the bad ones.
Landing pages
The profile should point at a page about that specific service, not at your homepage. This is the join between local search and the rest of the site. It is usually missing.

The honest limit

Distance is a ranking factor you cannot buy your way around. A business physically in Wigan town centre has a structural advantage for Wigan searches over one in Leigh. No amount of optimisation reverses that entirely.

What optimisation does is win the searches you are geographically eligible for and currently losing on relevance. That is a real and often large gain. It is not the same as ranking everywhere.

Which Wigan businesses this suits

Business typeLocal search valueWhy
Trades and home servicesVery highNear me searches with immediate intent, decided in the map pack.
Retail and hospitality with premisesHighOpening hours, directions and photos are the deciding factors.
Professional servicesModerateLocal intent exists but buyers also compare on the website itself.
Food production and wholesaleLow to moderateBuyers are trade accounts searching by product and accreditation.

If your row says low, local SEO is maintenance rather than strategy for you. The effort belongs on the main site work instead.

Common questions

What is the map pack and why does it matter so much?

It is the block of three business listings with a map that Google puts above the normal results for anything it reads as a local search. It matters because on a phone it occupies most of the first screen. The ordinary blue links below it get far fewer looks.

I work from home and cover the whole borough. What address do I use?

Set the profile up as a service area business, hide the address, and define the areas you genuinely cover. Publishing a home address you do not trade from creates a mismatch that is worse than having no address showing at all.

Does the primary category really change anything?

Yes, more than almost any other single field. The primary category is the strongest signal Google has about which searches you are eligible to appear in. A vague choice quietly removes you from the searches that matter most.

How should I handle reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every completed customer, at the point the job is finished, with a direct link. Never offer anything in exchange, never filter who you ask by how happy they seem, and reply to the negative ones factually rather than defensively.

Are directory listings and citations still worth doing?

They are worth getting consistent, not worth buying in bulk. Google uses the agreement between your name, address and phone number across the web as a confidence signal. The value is in the consistency rather than the volume.

Does local SEO help a Wigan manufacturer, or only trades?

It helps less and it is rarely the priority. A manufacturer selling into national supply chains is found through capability and specification searches rather than near me searches. The effort belongs on the main site, not the map listing.

Where local search meets AI

The same profile data that feeds the map pack is increasingly what AI assistants read when someone asks them to recommend a local firm. Getting it right now pays twice.

Local SEO sits inside the retainer, which starts at £600 a month FIXED. There is no separate local package. Separating it would mean doing half a job.
